Why Read About Someone Who Flies Planes, Golfs and has a Knack for Falling in Love with Beautiful Women?

Linda F. Radke for Don Volk

If someone is neither famous nor notorious, neither wealthy nor of royalty, if that someone has not climbed Mt. Everest while holding his breath nor discovered an endless supply of energy, is it an act of arrogance to write your autobiography? In a word, no. In fact, the life of Don W. Volk (recounted in his memoir Tractors, Planes, Golf and Dames) is more important because it is so much closer to our own. In his stories, we see ourselves, our parents, our grandparents.

As a young man, he learned everything mechanical that ran on the farm. He parlayed that knowledge into a career with the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force and served through three of the most major conflicts of our lifetime: World War II (The Greatest Generation), Korea, and Vietnam.

Afterwards, he turned his sights on his long love affair with the game of golf and earned his membership in the PGA of America and later became a life member. Over the years, he met some of the game’s most colorful characters and organized countless tournaments.

But this is not simply a story of accomplishments. He talks openly of the deep love he had for his wife Petie and of the trauma of her unsuccessful bout with cancer. Unimaginably, he fell in love again with his girlfriend Sandy, only to lose her to the disease as well. With the resilience and strength that have characterized his eight decades plus, he fell in love and married again, to a wonderful, sweet woman – Wandi.

His is a story that will inspire readers, not because of any headline-grabbing feats of glory but rather because of its message of gentle perseverance – dreams can become reality.
